4 Tips to Help Your Sphynx Cat Recover from Spay/Neuter Surgery - Part 4

Today’s tip is only for female cats to help them recover after being spayed.  You already know to ask for pain medication and to give your pet smaller meals. And if you have a boy cat, you know to use a soft e collar for maximum comfort while they heal.

Girl cats endure a much more invasive surgery process and so their recovery is typically longer. Keeping your female cat's incision site clean and free of irritation needs to be your priority so she doesn’t get an infection.

To do this, I recommend searching for something called a “spay suit”. You can look for a clothing maker on Etsy and there are lots to choose from. You can contact the seller and ask for a custom fit and give them your cat’s measurements. You want to be sure that the suit fits before they have surgery, because if it doesn’t and you don’t have alternatives like an e-collar on hand you are going to have a big problem. I urge you not to get a premade suit off of Amazon but to rather work with a designer who will make sure the suit is a perfect fit for your pet.

A spay suit looks much like a baby onesie and it covers their entire torso so they are unable to lick at their tummy sutures. Different designers will use slightly different designs but they will all open around the belly typically with velcro and have holes for your cat’s feet and head to fit through. There is usually an adjustable neckline, so you can make sure your cat can't wriggle her way out - the suit should fit snugly but not be too tight or restrictive because you want your kitty to be comfortable as she heals.

It’s also a good idea to get more than one spay suit so when you are washing one, your cat has another to wear. The bad news is that unfortunately this kind of suit will not work for boy cats and they will need to wear the “cone of shame” for the duration of their recovery. This is because a spay suit is completely open around the genital region so your female cat can go to the bathroom while wearing the suit. Of course this is the surgery region on male cats, so it will do no good to use one.

Keep giving your pets the best of natural life!
