How to Treat Diabetes in Your Sphynx Cat!

Here are the ways to treat diabetes in your Sphynx cat.

First up, we want to look at what are some of the predisposing factors that could be causing diabetes that can be removed.

Corticosteroids

Number one is if they are on corticosteroids - long-term corticosteroids can in some cases cause diabetes in cats. These are medications that are typically used to treat any type of inflammatory condition like severe allergies, asthma, or IBS. So, if that’s the case, looking into some natural remedies to heal those conditions at the root cause so that your cat can get off the corticosteroids is a good first step.

Weight Loss

Next up is weight. Weight loss is critical for preventing diabetes and also can be a treatment option - simply getting your cat back to a healthy weight can essentially cure their diabetes. Switching your cat to a high protein fresh food diet is the best way to do this. It may take up to a year to get your cat safely and slowly back to a healthy weight but it’s a really good option for treating diabetes.

Here are our top recommended fresh foods for cats, or you can take my low cost homemade pet food course to learn to make your own.

Insulin Injections

Lastly we have insulin injections as a treatment for diabetes. This is an absolute must for cats with type 1 diabetes which is not caused by weight or something like a corticosteroid. Even type 2 diabetes cats may need insulin injections for a period of time while they are slowly coming off the corticosteroid or getting to a healthy weight to rebalance their glucose levels.

It is very important to understand that there are situations where diabetes can be resolved and it doesn’t have to be a lifelong illness.
