Normal Sphynx Eye Discharge Vs. Signs Of Infection
Does your Sphynx cat have eye boogers? Eye boogers are completely normal, but it’s essential to be able to distinguish normal eye discharge from signs that could indicate an eye infection. Below, we’ll discuss signs and symptoms of both, so you know what’s normal and when to take action. Let’s begin!
Signs Of Normal Eye Discharge
Fun fact: Sphynx cats don't have eyelashes. Since the role of eyelashes is to block debris, dust, and other particles from entering your eye, those materials typically just build up around Sphynx cats' eyes due to their lack of eyelashes. Those materials turn into what we know as eye boogers. Eye boogers are normal. They should be a dark brownish color, and there should only be a small amount in the corners of their eyes. Typically, they will need to be cleaned out about every three days.
Signs Of An Eye Infection
Signs that could indicate your Sphynx cat has an eye infection could include:
One thing to keep in mind is that these symptoms could also be caused by allergies. The only way to know is to have your veterinarian test the discharge itself and run a feline upper respiratory PCR. This way, you'll know if it's allergies, bacterial, or viral.

To prevent infections and reduce the buildup of eye boogers, it's recommended that you use a gentle and all-natural antimicrobial eyewash.
