4 Tips to Help your Cat Recover from Spay/Neuter Surgery - Tip #1
Even when surgery is necessary, it is still difficult to watch your kitty in pain - that feeling of helplessness is horrible. Luckily there are some things you can do to help them through their recovery.
Tip #1
Ask your vet to give you some pain medication to take home with you. In my experience, not all veterinarians offer pain medication so you must ask. Typically it is more common that it will be offered after a spay appointment for a female cat. This is because in general spay surgery is more invasive, however, the pain medication given at the time of the surgery doesn’t last very long. I have seen many cats (both kittens and adult cats who are spayed or neutered later on) experiencing pain after the surgery, when the initial pain injection wears off.
The pain medication will help to keep your cat or kitten more sedated and comfortable over the next few days following surgery. This is especially important in younger cats because we need to reduce their activity to make sure that they heal well and don’t have any complications at the surgery site.
