7 Reasons Your Cat Sleeps So Much - Part 2

Cats love to sleep, everyone knows that, but there are a number of reasons why.

The first reason relates to their lifestage - very old and very young cats sleep much more than their middle aged counterparts.

Another reason relates to their evolutionary history. Cats, when they sleep, don’t tend to fall into a very deep sleep. When they sleep it is usually only cat naps for around 15 to 20 minutes. This is because in the wild, they would want to remain on the alert for potential dangers that may be approaching (they are both prey and predator animals and there are many dangers to a kitty out in the wild).

Cats are obligate carnivores which makes them natural predators - they typically hunt mice and birds out in the wild (and if you’re very lucky, they will bring you one as a gift). When cats are out hunting and chasing their prey, they use up a lot of energy. So if they are out hunting 3 or 4 times a day, they are using huge amounts of energy in a short space of time which means that biologically they are designed to need a lot of rest between these periods of hunting. Lots of rest means that when they do go out to hunt, their energy is fully recharged and they are in peak condition to hunt successfully.

So today’s cat tip is that while we know our cats are superb sleepers this isn’t just because of choice - there are natural, instinctive reasons our cats sleep so much

Keep giving your pets the best of natural life!
