Puppy and kitten breath is just the best, but if your pet is older and has stinky breath you need to address it before it leads to major dental problems, pain for your pet and pain in your wallet!
Natural dental chews are a great tool to help you keep your pet’s mouth clean, however, they are not a replacement for regular teeth cleaning with a brush and a pet safe toothpaste. They are also not a replacement for regular trips to your veterinarian for professional teeth cleaning.
The big problem is that many of the dental chews on the market for cats and dogs are full of artificial ingredients that your pet just shouldn’t be eating. Typically, they are also full of sugars, which is counterintuitive to keeping teeth clean. I have heard many stories of a host of digestive complaints arising from these types of chews and, ironically, dental issues like cracked and broken teeth.
So before you buy the first thing you see, do some research and shop around to look for healthy alternatives.
One of the best things I recommend is any type of raw bone (they must be uncooked). For dogs, look for big meaty bones for them to chew on (you will earn serious levels of puppy parent points serving up such a yummy treat) and for cats, look for smaller things that are edible like a chicken or turkey wing. Please supervise your pet while they chew on bones to remove any small pieces that can break off and become choking hazards.
Some other great natural alternatives are things like, dried lamb or cow ears, chicken feet, dried liver or hearts, and dried jerky (chicken, beef and turkey are all great options).
These are great options that your pet can really chew on to help with naturally cleaning their teeth, gums, and mouth.
