Reducing the Risk of Your Sphynx Kitten Developing HCM Heart Disease!

If you're considering adopting a Sphynx kitten, you’ve probably come across one of the biggest health concerns in the breed: HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). This genetic heart disease is common in Sphynx cats and some other breeds, causing the heart walls to thicken, eventually leading to congestive heart failure and, sadly, premature death.

Unfortunately, even with the most responsible breeders, there’s no 100% guarantee that a Sphynx won’t develop HCM. But if you’re looking to reduce the risk as much as possible, there are key steps you can take before choosing a breeder.

What Is HCM?

HCM is a progressive heart disease that affects cats of all breeds, but it is particularly prevalent in Sphynx cats. Over time, the walls of the heart thicken, which can lead to:

  • Decreased heart function

  • Congestive heart failure

  • Sudden cardiac arrest

Since the disease is genetically linked, responsible breeding practices are the only way to lower the chances of a kitten developing HCM later in life.

How to Choose a Responsible Breeder & Reduce HCM Risk

The #1 most important thing to look for when adopting a Sphynx kitten is a breeder who regularly scans their adult cats for HCM using an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound).

  • Ask for proof! Don't just take the breeder’s word for it. Request the actual scan results from a licensed veterinary cardiologist.

  • Confirm it’s a specialist. Not all vets can perform this test correctly. Only a veterinary cardiologist can accurately measure heart thickness and detect early signs of HCM.

Unfortunately, some breeders cut corners because echocardiograms are expensive. If a breeder won’t show you proof of scans, that’s a red flag - walk away!

DNA Testing Is NOT a Reliable HCM Indicator

For years, there was a DNA saliva test that some breeders used to determine if a kitten was at risk for HCM. However, recent research has proven this test is NOT accurate.

  • A negative DNA test does NOT mean your cat is HCM-free.

  • Breeders who rely on DNA testing instead of heart scans are NOT reducing HCM risk.

The only reliable way to assess a Sphynx cat’s heart health is through regular echocardiograms performed by a veterinary cardiologist.

Supporting Heart Health with Supplements

While genetics play a major role in HCM, nutritional support can help strengthen your Sphynx’s heart and overall well-being. Two key supplements that may offer additional cardiovascular support include:

Ubiquinol (CoQ10): A highly absorbable antioxidant that supports heart function, boosts energy, and helps reduce oxidative stress. As cats age, their ability to produce and convert CoQ10 declines, so supplementation can be beneficial especially for breeds prone to heart conditions.

ReNewedPet® Organ Health Powder: Made from grass-fed, hormone-free bovine organs, this powder provides essential nutrients that support the heart, liver, and kidneys. A great natural option for cats needing extra cardiovascular support.

Adding the right supplements alongside a high-quality diet and regular veterinary care can be a proactive step in keeping your Sphynx’s heart as healthy as possible.

While no breeder can guarantee a Sphynx kitten won’t develop HCM, adopting from a breeder who:

  • Scans all breeding cats for HCM regularly

  • Uses a licensed veterinary cardiologist for testing

  • Provides proof of heart scans

…significantly reduces the risk.

HCM is a serious condition, but with the right breeder selection, you can increase your chances of adopting a healthy, long-lived Sphynx.
