The Silent Symptoms Of HCM

Do you have your Sphynx cat regularly tested for HCM? If you don't, this is your sign that you should start. The scary part about HCM is that the disease can progress quietly. Below, we'll cover the silent symptoms of HCM.

What Is HCM?

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM, is when the walls of your Sphynx cat's heart thicken. This limits blood flow and can lead to blood clots and heart failure.

What Are The Symptoms Of HCM?

Some of the symptoms of HCM include:

  • Rapid or labored breathing

  • Lethargy

  • Abdominal distention

  • A decrease in energy or activity

  • Panting or open mouth breathing, especially after exercise

  • Weight loss

  • Loss of appetite

  • A heart murmur

  • Collapse or fainting

  • Fluid buildup in the lungs, which causes coughing or wheezing

  • A weak pulse

  • Cold or pale gums

How Often Should Your Cat Be Tested For HCM?

Unfortunately, most of the time HCM is a silent disease, and you may not notice signs until the disease has progressed. This is why early detection is imperative and why you should have your cat regularly tested. It's recommended that your cat have an echocardiogram heart scan done by a professional cardiologist at least every 2 years. Between heart scans, your vet can order a proBNP test. This is a blood test that looks for heart inflammation or heart damage.

In Conclusion

With HCM, this disease is often silent until it progresses. This is why early detection is crucial. Sphynx cats are unfortunately more prone to developing this disease, so regular HCM checks are important for ensuring that your hairless baby is set up to live a long life.
