If Your Cat is NOT Using the Litter Box - Do THIS! Part 9...
I think by now it’s clear you have a particularly stubborn kitty who has resisted all your diligent efforts to entice them to the litter box. If you have the right number of the correct type of boxes filled with a cat-safe litter, and you've given them the necessary privacy in a quiet spot to do their business calmly while you remortgage your home for shares in an enzymatic cleaner company and your kitty still won't use their designated toilet, then I hate to say it, but it’s time for some tough love!
What you want to do is to recreate what a good breeder does when they are raising kittens and that is to quarantine your cat in a small space - like some type of pet pen or large crate. This limits the area that your cat has to move about.
In this smaller living area, you will want to have a space dedicated to the litter box, one space for sleeping and another for eating and their water. This helps to train your cat to go to a designated area routinely to use the bathroom. As we have said, cats are extremely clean creatures and in a smaller living space, they will not want to go to the bathroom where they eat or sleep so the litter box is the only other available area for them to go.
Once your cat is successfully using the litter box in this quarantined area you can start letting them out after a few days for short periods of time that gradually get longer until they are back to using the litter box correctly.
If you would like to know more about this method of retraining your cat to use the litter box, you can watch this video which will walk you through the entire process step-by-step.
