Welcome to the first installment of the ultimate litter box series. The next few blogs will tackle all the solutions you can try if your kitty is stubbornly insisting on going outside the litter box.

The first thing to know is that it is actually a fairly common problem that cat parents face.  However un-fun it might be mopping up wee on your favorite rug, the good news is that it is a completely solvable issue if you know what to do. Over the next few weeks I am going to share all my expert knowledge, tips and tricks with you to help you navigate through this problem and solve it for good!

The first step when facing any behavior problem, but especially peeing and pooping outside the litter box is to take your kitty for a full medical check-up at your veterinarian. They will be able to rule out any medical issues that might be responsible for this (for example, a UTI).

Once you have the all-clear from your vet, this is now a behavioral issue that you can work to correct. 

The first thing to do when tackling a behavioral problem in your pet is to critically examine your home and your cat’s environment to try to determine what could be causing them to not want to go to the bathroom in their litter box. There are a number of reasons why your cat may not be wanting to use the litter box provided.

One of the most common reasons is actually the simplest one to fix. You may simply just not have enough litter boxes for your kitty to use. 

The recommendation is to have one more litter box than you have cats. 

So, 1 cat = 2 litter boxes; 2 cats = 3 litter boxes and so on…

If you do not have an extra litter box in your home, hop in your car and go get one, place it in a nice quiet area of your house and see if it helps!
