What is Feline Herpes Virus... And Does Your Cat Have It?

Have you heard of Feline Herpes Virus? Here’s how to know if your cat has it…

The Feline Herpes Virus is actually very common with up to 80% of cats estimated to carry this virus.

It can flare up at any time in their life but usually it’s going to be precipitated by an experience of stress.

Examples of stress are moving house, getting a new pet, you’ve had a baby, you’ve had lots of people coming over to visit, or even a visit to the veterinarian - there are any number of things that would cause physical or emotional stress in your cat that would cause the virus to flare up and make your cat symptomatic.

If your cat is experiencing any of the following symptoms they might be infected with Feline Herpes Virus:

  • Watery eyes
  • Discharge coming from the eyes
  • Frequent sneezing - often cats will sneeze 20 to 40 times in a row (it’s important to note that sneezing in cats can often look like a cough so you need to be aware of that)
  • A rash or rash lesions around their neck, arms, and legs
  • Itchy skin
  • Clear discharge coming from their nose
  • Lethargic - they seem a bit run down
  • Fever - there may be a fever while their body is fighting this viral flare up

So, if your kitty is experiencing any of these symptoms and you think they might have the Feline Herpes Virus, please reach out to your vet.
