What is FIP in Sphynx Cats?

This is what you need to know about FIP in cats…

FIP stands for Feline Infectious Peritonitis and this is a very serious, life-threatening viral infection in cats.

The virus comes from a strain of enteric viruses (which means it infects the GI system) and is  called coronavirus. There are multiple different strains of coronavirus in cats and this is actually a very common virus - up to 80 - 90% of multi-cat households do test positive for the coronavirus.

Now for 90% of cats that come into contact with the coronavirus it turns into basically a stomach bug - some vomiting, diarrhea, loose stool and in a few days the symptoms resolve. The virus goes into remission and typically they don’t have any issues with it for the rest of their life.

However, for some cats, the remaining 10%, a simple stomach bug infection for whatever reason mutates and becomes the more serious, life-threatening version of the virus - FIP (feline infectious peritonitis).

So today’s cat tip is - it’s very important that you stay aware of what the symptoms of FIP can look like in case your cat has the serious version of it.
