Have you heard of this rare type of diabetes?

I'm positive everyone has heard of Diabetes Mellitus, however there is another type of diabetes that most people have never heard of.

It is very rare in cats and very difficult to diagnose.

It’s called Diabetes Insipidus.

Diabetes Insipidus is caused by a different set of factors in the body. This condition is caused by a hormone called antidiuretic hormone (otherwise known as vasopressin) becoming too low.

This condition can be caused by a number of factors - sometimes it can be a birth defect, it can be caused by a tumor or cyst or even an injury and sometimes the cause is unknown, called idiopathic.

Now the main symptom in Diabetes Insipidus is increased urine output and this also will come with increased drinking. Your cat could become dehydrated even though they're consuming large quantities of water. 

So the big takeaway from today's cat tip is if you see your cat drinking more water than normal and urinating more than normal, bring them to the vet. This could be a sign of Diabetes Mellitus or this very rare type of diabetes called Diabetes Insipidus which can only be diagnosed once many more of the more common diseases are ruled out.

It's a good thing to know about this type of diabetes so you can keep it in the back of your mind should this situation ever come up in your pet.
