Eye Boogers are gross - we all get them and our pets are no different!
Eye discharge is a very normal part of Sphynx parenting and I’m sure you will have all noticed the bits of gunk in the corners of your cat’s eyes from time to time. For the most part, this is just the eye processing the dust and other particles that get trapped in there as your cat goes about their life. But sometimes, this gunk can be a sign of something else that’s going on with your kitty’s eyes.
Here’s what you need to know about eye discharge and your sphynx cat.
A bit of discharge in your sphynx cat’s eyes is completely normal - since their eye anatomy differs from furry cats (they don’t have eyelashes or fur on their face most notably), more dust and particles get into their eyes which causes a bit more irritation and can produce additional discharge.
When this discharge falls within normal parameters, it will typically be only a small amount of dark brown/reddish colored gunk that needs cleaning out every three days or so. Anything more than this would be considered excessive.
If you are having to wash out your cat’s eyes daily or you notice continual drainage from their eyes or the discharge is a green/yellow/white color, then this is not normal and there may be a problem that needs to be addressed.
If you suspect that your cat’s eye discharge is not normal, please book a visit to your vet. They will do tests on the actual discharge to learn whether it is a bacterial or viral infection or if there is a problem with your cat’s eye duct that may need medical treatment.
