If you have a cat, especially a young cat, you know how important it is to play with them to keep them healthy! You also know that it’s important to find an engaging and exciting toy for your cat, before they decided to find one themselves in your home.
Cats are known for being finicky with just about everything, and toys are no exception to this rule. However, it’s hard for cats to resist a wand toy!
Why Use a Wand Toy?
Cats play because it simulates hunting, and they have an instinctual need to act on their hunting impulses. Cats usually hunt mice and other small vermin, so toys that replicate the movements of these creatures are usually the most inviting to your kitty.
That’s why the wand toy is so perfect! You are able to easily replicate the quick movements of prey animals. It’s also super easy to use and can be used by anyone, regardless of pf physical ability. There are two parts to the wand toy: The handle and the toy area, which includes the string. A quality wand toy will have key features in each of the areas.
The Handle
For a handle, I usually choose natural materials, like wood, to reduce the chance of any toxins. You also want the handle of your wand toy to be as long as you can comfortably use it. The further away the toy is from your hand, the more inviting and realistic it is to your cat.
The Toy
The toy is attached to the end of the string, and that attachment point is very important! To keep your cat engaged in play, you’ll want some sort of attachment system at the end of the string. This will allow you to switch out the toys every day, or even in the same play session for cats that need more fun. You’ll also want to ensure that the toys you use have strings attached that keep it far away from the attachment area. Most of these clips are metal, and you’ll want to keep your kitty’s mouth and teeth as far away from it as possible.
