The material that should be avoided at all costs is plastic! Plastic bowls are porous, meaning they have small holes in their surface that allows bacteria and other pathogens to hide. These pathogens can cause health issues in your pets, most commonly acne on their faces where they touch the plastic surface.
What Pet Bowls Should I Use?
It is best to use non-porous materials for your pet’s food and water bowls. Glass, ceramic, and stainless steel are all great options. Thankfully, all these options are readily available at pet stores!
Recent studies have compared the various recommended food bowls. These studies have found that stainless steel is the best material to use for pet food and water bowls. It stays the cleanest and doesn’t build up bacteria or biofilm as easily as the other options. It is also lightweight and easy to clean making it a pet parent favorite!
