Diabetes in Sphynx Cats Explained...

Here’s what you need to know about diabetes and your sphynx cat.

Just like humans, cats can develop diabetes.

There are two different types of diabetes, just like with humans - Diabetes Type 1 and Diabetes Type 2.

These two types of diabetes stem from completely different causes. Diabetes Type 1 is more rare and Diabetes Type 2 is more common.

The difference is that type 1 Diabetes is actually considered an autoimmune disease because the body's immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that are responsible for making insulin therefore the body makes very little to no insulin and the pet or person develops diabetes.

Diabetes Type 2 is not an autoimmune condition and it's typically dubbed the insulin resistant type of diabetes. What happens is that over time the body's exposure to high amounts of carbohydrates makes the pancreas either produce less insulin overall, or it produces insulin but the insulin itself becomes less and less effective over time therefore the body becomes resistant to the job of the insulin.

So today's cat tip is, yes, your cat absolutely can develop either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

In my follow-up videos coming soon we'll talk more about why these different types of diabetes develop in your cats, what you can do to prevent it and signs you should be looking for if your cat is developing diabetes, so stay tuned.
