Does Your Sphynx Cat Have Waxy Ears? Here’s How To Help!

If you own a Sphynx cat, you know that they have some quirky and unique qualities about them, and one thing you may not have been prepared to handle is how waxy their ears get. If your hairless baby struggles with waxy ears, don’t worry, you’re not alone! While it’s normal, it does call for a little extra care to keep their ears clean and your cat happy. Below, we explore why this occurs and how to care for your Sphynx cat’s waxy ears.

Why Do Sphynx Cats Get Waxy Ears?

Since hairless cats lack fur, their bodies produce extra oils to protect their skin. Those oils often find their way into your cat’s ear canal. This can end up trapping dirt and debris and forming that thick, brownish, waxy buildup.

Naturally Clean Their Ears

The good news is that there are some measures you can take to potentially prevent and also remove the wax! To remove the wax, try our all-natural Ear Cleaner. It’s a gentle but effective formula that’s safe for cats and dogs.

How to use it:

  1. Carefully place a few drops into your cat’s ear canal.

  2. Gently wipe away any excess ear cleaner that you see with a soft cotton pad (Make sure you never use Q-tips in their ears, as they can cause serious injury to your pet).

  3. Allow the ear cleaner to work its magic, as it will dry up and pull wax and debris to the surface over the next 24 hours.

There are two options: the single bottle all-natural Ear Cleaner and the Ear Cleaner Kit with Cap. The option with the cap will provide you with the least messy experience, as the cap can catch any excess oil your cat may fling around when they shake their head. The cleaner is oil-based, which means it will stain clothing, so the cap can protect and keep fabrics clean. The cap can also be used in the shower to prevent water and soap from entering their ears and causing infections.

Supporting Healthy Ears From the Inside Out

Believe it or not, healthy ears start with a healthy gut! By adding digestive and probiotic supplements to your Sphynx’s routine and getting them on a fresh and healthy diet, you can help balance their internal flora. This can reduce earwax buildup and ear irritation in the long run.

Final thoughts

Even though Sphynx cats aren’t strangers to waxy ears, it doesn’t mean this has to be something they constantly have to deal with. With the right diet, ear cleaner, and supplement regimen, your cat will continue to thrive, but with cleaner and healthier ears!
