How to Determine Your Skinny Pig's Age!

Sometimes when you adopt a skinny pig, for example from a pet store, or if someone is rehoming, you may not know when their birthday is. This is not always ideal, but don’t worry, there are ways to make an educated guess about your skinny pig's age, even if their birthdate remains a mystery.

The Tale-Tell Signs of Aging in Skinny Pigs

While our mini hippos don't have rings to count like trees, they do have certain characteristics that change as they age. Here’s what to look out for…

Weight and Size

One of the most straightforward indicators of age is the size and weight of your skinny pig. Generally, a fully grown skinny pig can weigh anywhere from 700 to 1200 grams, with males usually being on the heavier side. Pups grow rapidly until they are about 6-8 months old, after which their growth rate slows down. If your skinny pig is still in the "growing like a weed" phase, it's likely under 8 months old.

Teeth

The teeth of a skinny pig can also provide valuable insights into their age. Young skinny pigs have bright, white teeth that are relatively sharp. As they age, their teeth may start to show signs of wear, becoming more dull and less sharp. Additionally, older skinny pigs might have some discoloration or unevenness in their teeth due to years of munching on their favorite snacks.

Behavior

Behavioral changes can also hint at a skinny pig's age. Younger skinny pigs are typically more energetic and curious, exploring their surroundings with gusto. As they age, they may become more sedate and prefer lounging around to running laps. However, each skinny pig has its own personality, so this is more of a general trend than a hard rule.

Making an Educated Guess

If you're trying to pinpoint your skinny pig's age without any birth records, looking at a combination of the above factors can give you a ballpark figure of their age.

If you’re still unsure, sometimes, it helps to bring in a professional. An exotic vet experienced with skinny pigs can provide a more accurate estimate based on a physical examination.

If you adopted your skinny pig, try to gather as much information as possible from the previous owner, pet store, or shelter. Even small details can help narrow down the age.

Why Knowing Your Skinny Pig's Age Matters

Understanding the age of your skinny pig is not just a matter of satisfying your curiosity - it's also crucial for providing the best care. Different life stages require different types of attention, from dietary needs to health monitoring.

While it's great to have an idea of your skinny pig's age, remember that the most important thing is the love and care you provide.

So, whether they're young, old, or somewhere in between, as long as they’re healthy and happy, isn't that all that really matters?
