Tackling dry skin is a common problem for parents of hairless pets, but one aspect of this that's often overlooked is your pet's feet. Skinny pigs who are struggling with dry skin on their body, often also have dry and cracked skin on their feet. With this in mind, I’ve gathered together everything you need to know – from causes and symptoms to effective treatments.

Understanding the Issue
Dry and cracked feet aren't just uncomfortable for your skinny pig, they can be downright painful (if you as a human have ever had cracked heels, then you know every step you take hurts).
If not treated timeously dry, cracked feet can lead to more serious health issues, like bumblefoot.
Causes
Several factors contribute to dry, cracked feet in skinny pigs. Low humidity levels, especially during winter, can sap moisture from their skin. Additionally, exposure to harsh bedding materials or irritants in their environment can exacerbate the problem. It is so important to ensure your cage bottom is not wire or mesh as this is extremely difficult for skinny pigs to walk on and can cause all sorts of foot issues.
Symptoms
Keep an eye out for flaky, rough patches on your skinny pig’s skin, particularly on their feet. Cracks might not be immediately visible, but you might notice your piggy moving more cautiously or reacting when you touch their feet. Thoroughly inspecting their feet regularly will help you to catch any foot issues early so that they do not become massive problems.
Treating Those Tiny Toes
-
Consider using a humidifier in the room where your skinny pig lives to help keep their skin supple.
-
Opt for soft, hypoallergenic bedding to minimize irritation. Regularly cleaning their living space, particularly removing soiled bedding timeously, will keep irritation at bay. Always use pet-safe cleaning products as chemical sprays and cleaners can also dry out the skin and can irritate the feet of your piggy if they walk in it.
-
Regularly treat your piggy to a spa day, where you use products that are specially designed for hairless pets, like RenewedPet’s. Our sensitive range of shampoos and conditioners are specially formulated to combat dry skin and lock in moisture. You should regularly clean your skinny pigs paws with a specialized product like our nail and paw cleaner, which keeps feet in tip-top shape with minimal effort.
-
Ensure your skinny pig’s diet is rich in essential nutrients and minerals , which can help improve skin health from the inside out.
- Always make sure your skinny pig has access to enough clean, fresh water to keep them hydrated.
Dry skin and cracked feet don't have to be a given for your hairless friend. Remember, with the right care, making prevention a priority, you can ensure your skinny pig is happy, healthy, and ready for cuddles.
Keep giving your pets the best of natural life!
