How to Properly De-Sensitize your Sphynx Cat to Wearing Clothes!

If you’ve ever tried introducing something new to your Sphynx cat, you already know: cats don’t exactly love change.

In fact, most of our hairless babies are incredibly sensitive to anything new in their environment, whether it’s a new cat bed, a harness, a litter box, or even a grooming accessory like our RenewedPet® shower cap.

That’s why it’s so important to take your time and introduce new items the right way. A slow, steady desensitization process can make all the difference between a cat who panics and a cat who calmly accepts their new gear like a pro.

Here’s exactly how I recommend getting your cat used to their new RenewedPet® shower cap (or anything new):

Day One: Familiarization

Start by simply placing the new item near your cat. Let them sniff it, explore it, and satisfy their curiosity without any pressure. As soon as they interact with it, even just a sniff, reward them with their favorite treat!

Pro Tip: You can even place the treat on top of the item, like a lickable cat treat or a freeze-dried morsel, to build a positive association.

Day Two: First Gentle Contact

Now that your cat is familiar with the shower cap, it’s time to try very light, very short contact.

Gently drape the cap onto your cat for just 3–5 seconds only. Immediately reward them with a treat! Repeat the process a few times, keeping it fun and positive. If your cat handles it well, you can extend the contact time to about 10 seconds by the end of the day.

Day Three: Full Wear

Today you’ll move on to putting the shower cap fully on (properly fitted) for a short period - again just 3, 5, or 10 seconds at a time, with treats and praise immediately afterward.

Most cats are comfortable with the new item by day three, but remember to always go at your cat’s pace. Some may breeze through in a few days, while others may need a week or more to feel totally at ease and that’s okay!

Key Tips:

  • Always prioritize your cat’s comfort.

  • Celebrate every tiny success.

  • Never rush the process - patience is the name of the game!

By using slow and positive desensitization, you’re setting your cat up for success, not just with the RenewedPet® shower cap, but with any new items they encounter throughout their life.

Keep giving your pets the best of natural life!
