Sphynx Cats & Other Pets: The Importance of a Proper Introduction

There’s nothing more exciting than bringing a Sphynx kitten home; however, it can also be stressful. Not knowing how the introduction is going to go with your other pets can definitely add some anxiety to this experience. While some pets may warm up to each other right away, some may need a little bit of time. It's all about introducing them properly to build a lasting bond. It's important to keep in mind that a poor introduction can lead to tension and aggression between your pets that could last days, weeks, and yes, even years. The key is to make a good first impression. Below, we discuss some ways that could make the process go smoother when introducing your Sphinx cat to other pets.

Why Safe Introductions Are Important

Going into the introduction process prepared is ideal for giving yourself and everyone involved the best chance of it going smoothly. First impressions are everything, and your pets meeting is no exception to the rule. Think of it this way, have you ever met someone, and the introduction was less than stellar? When you think of that person, do you think of the lasting impression that interaction gave you? Introductions are similar for pets as well. They will remember these interactions, and you don’t want the first meeting to start off on the wrong foot. You will also want all involved to feel as comfortable and calm as possible to keep everyone safe.

Start The Process Slowly

When introducing your pets, start slowly. Let the pets start out separated first. Give them time to become acclimated to each other's scents first. When you bring them together, always look out for signs of discomfort. If your pet seems stressed, don’t force it. If the pet freezes and tenses up, they are likely uncomfortable. Any good friendship, even one with your pets, should come naturally to build a strong and lasting bond. That won’t happen if your pet is uncomfortable. Just remember, this could take time for them to become adjusted to each other, and that’s okay!

Tips For Introducing Your Sphynx Cats And Other Pets

  • Get a LARGE dog crate. One that would fit a great dane is ideal.

  • Put your new kitten or puppy into the crate for around 7-10 days. This will give time for your pets to slowly and safely get to know each other.

  • Make sure you spend plenty of time socializing the pets between the safety of the cage. 1. You can feed meals with one inside the crate and one outside. Begin with the dish about 3 feet away from the crate, and each day move the dish a little closer as the pets become more comfortable. 2. Make sure you give treats to both pets. 3. Play with toys between the crate. You can use long stick toys or wand-type toys.

  • Rotate the pets with the crate. About 1-2 hours a day, the new pet should be rotated out of the crate to get acclimated with their new house safely (this should be supervised). The other pet should be placed in the crate during this time.

  • Continue the above process until you are sure that it’s safe and you feel comfortable letting the pets around each other without a crate as a barrier. Watch for signs of stress: growling, hissing, ears back, and showing teeth.

  • Keep the crate as an option for your pets to use as their comfort zone or safe space. You may also want to use the crate when you’re not home or at night when you can’t supervise your pets.

A Little Extra Support for A Calmer Introduction

While being prepared with a safe introduction plan is important, nerves can sometimes still get the better of pets. In this case, a little extra support for those nerves isn’t a bad idea. That's where these options come in:

Both formulas are designed for both cats and dogs. They are a gentle way to help calm anxious energy. Think of these products as a little extra support to give you a peace-of-mind boost for you and your pets during this big adjustment period.

Final Thoughts

While introducing your pets can be a little overwhelming, remember that patience pays off. It’s better to take your time introducing your pets safely to build lasting friendships than to rush it. By taking proper precautions, providing supervision, and even giving some natural calming remedies, you can create a safe and happy environment for your pets.
