What are the Symptoms of Diabetes in Sphynx Cats?

Unfortunately diabetes is on the rise in cats so it’s really important that you know how to recognize the signs and symptoms that your cat may be developing diabetes.

Here are some common signs that indicate your cat may have diabetes.

  1. Excessive thirst
  2. Excessive urination (even if they’re not drinking more fluids than usual).
  3. Excessive appetite coupled with weight loss even though they may be eating more than normal.

These 3 symptoms make up the main core of symptoms that indicate your cat may be developing diabetes.

If your cat is exhibiting any of these signs, it’s a good idea to get them to your vet so they can be checked out immediately. Diagnosing diabetes is actually very simple and can be done in 2 ways:

  1.  a blood test that measures the level of glucose present. If the levels are higher than usual it indicates diabetes.
  2. A urine test that also measures glucose levels and if the levels are higher than normal it may indicate diabetes.

A diagnosis of diabetes can be very upsetting but the good news is that there are some very good treatments available to help. The bad news is that it does often involve a daily injection of insulin for your cat so please be sure to educate yourself on the fact that type 2 diabetes does not have to be a lifelong illness. There are diets and supplements that can reverse diabetes in cats.

So if your kitty has been diagnosed with diabetes, please reach out to us at RenewedPet as we have some wonderful resources we can send that can help you and your cat.
