What To Do If Your Skinny Pig Develops Calluses!

Not all skinny pigs will develop a callus on their feet in their lifetime, but it’s important to know what to do if your pet does develop this foot condition.

What Are Calluses?

Calluses form as a response to pressure or friction, developing as thickened, often less sensitive areas of skin. In skinny pigs, these typically appear on their feet due to the hard surfaces they may walk on in their enclosures. While not inherently harmful, if left unmanaged, calluses can crack, bleed, become infected, or cause discomfort.

What Causes Calluses to Form?

The main culprits include hard flooring, unsuitable bedding, or a lack of soft resting areas. Being overweight can also contribute, putting extra pressure on those tiny feet.

Spotting the Signs

Calluses are usually easy to spot – look for thickened, hardened areas of skin on the bottoms of their feet. While they may not bother your skinny pig initially, watch for changes in their behavior or difficulty walking that may indicate discomfort.

Treatment

  1. Soften Their World:

Replace hard, abrasive surfaces with softer bedding options like fleece that provide ample cushioning that doesn't irritate their feet.

  1. Weight Watch:

Ensuring your skinny pig maintains a healthy weight can reduce the pressure on their feet, preventing calluses from worsening. Investing in a pet scale can help you keep track of their weight easily.

  1. Moisturize:

Using pet-safe moisturizing products like RenewedPet’s sensitive shampoo and conditioner can help keep the skin on their feet supple and prevent cracking and pain.

  1. Vet Visits:

For calluses that crack or bleed, or if you're concerned they're causing pain, a visit to the vet is in order.

Staying a Step Ahead…

Preventative measures are straightforward yet effective. Regularly inspect your skinny pig's feet for early signs of calluses, maintain a clean and soft living environment, and monitor their diet to prevent obesity. These steps, simple as they may seem, are your best defense against calluses and the complications they can bring.

Calluses don't have to be a pain point for your skinny pig. With the right care and attention to their living conditions, you can ensure those precious paws are walking on Cloud Nine!
