Why Organic Cat Litter May Not Be The Best Choice For Your Cat!

Today’s topic is organic litter - now the term organic is often associated with something good, things that are natural and pure, but this is not always the case. Here are some important things to be aware of when choosing an organic litter.

Firstly, what do I mean when I say organic? I’m referring to litters made from paper, pine, yucca, soy, wheat, walnut shells, corn or grass - these are all organic compounds.

The marketers for these litters, make them seem really great, as if they’re the best options you can choose because they’re made from things that occur in nature. Then they add the cincher - it’s biodegradable and safe for the environment and you go purchase it feeling like you’ve hit the jackpot!

Then a short while later your precious kitty is sneezing, has watery eyes or has a skin rash - WHAT????

The thing you have to be aware of when it comes to these litters is that they can induce allergies.

If you have a kitty like my Stubbin, who has sensitive skin, asthma or any other kind of respiratory issues or allergies, things like wood, pine, grass, wheat and soy are likely to result in an allergic reaction.

It’s more common than you’d think for cats to be allergic to these organic materials.

If your kitty does not suffer from allergies, you can go ahead and try these litters and more than likely your cat will be fine - just exercise caution if you have a cat with a history of allergies. If your cat suffers with allergies, it’s a good idea to have them on an allergy supplement to help keep flare ups in check.

Today’s cat tip is that these natural, organic cat litters can be amazing for a lot of cats and are of course great for the environment, but if you have a cat with allergies, they can be a big problem and it would be best to consider hypoallergenic litter options instead.
