It’s no secret just how much cats love boxes! If you have a kitty, online shopping delivery day is like Christmas for them, and even if you don’t have a cat (seriously, why not?) I’m sure you’ve seen all the cute videos of cats in boxes all over the internet.
While this is a known fact, most people don’t know why cats have such an affinity for boxes, so I’m going to solve the mystery for you.
Here are the reasons your cat is instinctively drawn to boxes.
Temperature
Cats prefer their ambient temperature to be between 86 and 97 degrees. This is because they descend from desert animals so they REALLY like the heat. This makes them want to go into small spaces like a box, because it allows their own body heat to warm up that space and bring the temperature up to the higher degrees they enjoy. It’s also the reason why no sunbeam in your house will ever be safe again - cats seek out warmth like heat-seeking missiles!
Status In The Wild
Cats are both prey and predator out in the wild. While you might have a pampered house kitty, their evolutionary instincts are ingrained. Out in the wild, there are many animals that would potentially hunt a cat so they are programmed to rest in a safe space where they are well hidden from predators when they are not hunting. Out in nature they would hide in trees, caves, and other similar boxed in areas to reduce stress and stay safe from threats in their environment.
Today’s cat tip is since your cat is naturally designed to love boxes, be sure to give them a fun box to play with and hide in. Even better have a few around your home, or even spoil them with some cat-caves, or houses so they can satisfy their instincts.
Keep giving your pets the best of natural life!
