Why You Should AVOID Fragranced Cat Litter!

There truly is no one size fits all cat litter for your cat. There are many great litter options on the market today, however, there are a number of things you should consider before choosing one.

You already know to avoid cheap clay litters for your kitty because they are often full of harmful synthetic chemicals that can cause lung disease.

Today we are going to take a look at fragranced litters and why you should avoid them.

While choosing something that smells nice, may be what you want, I can assure you that your cat does not want their litter to smell like anything - especially not a strong chemical fragrance that would be added to the litter to help mask the urine odor.

These chemical fragrances are added to the litter to make them more appealing for humans, but it is not in the best interests of your cat. The synthetic nature of the chemicals can be very harmful to your cat’s respiratory system, they can cause inflammation and asthma and can even irritate your kitty’s sensitive skin, causing skin allergies and flare ups that can be difficult to manage and really uncomfortable for your pet.

PRO TIP: if you are in the throes of a litter induced skin allergy, you can use RenewedPet’s restorative shampoo and conditioner to help clear up the irritation and give your kitty some relief. If you are struggling with a stubborn skin rash that the shampoo and conditioner is not soothing fast enough, you can use our healing salve to speed up skin recovery.

When your pet digs in their litter to cover their waste, they are coming directly in contact with all these harmful chemicals that get absorbed through their skin causing damage and health issues. Over time, these fragranced litters can also cause endocrine disruptions in their endocrine system as these chemicals get absorbed on a daily basis.

So be sure you choose a fragrance free litter, or look for a litter that is fragranced with natural, pet-safe essential oils.

Dr. Elseys is a brand that does this so you get the best of both worlds - a little fragrance for you that is still healthy for your cat.

Today’s cat tip is to give your kitty’s what they want - they just want a nice clean litter that doesn’t have a strong, overpowering smell.
