Have you ever wondered why cats and dogs can only move their jaws up and down, and not left to right like we can? Here’s why!
What This Means
The way that an animal’s jaw moves is a great indicator of what their natural diet looks like and what they should be eating.
Cats are obligate carnivores and our dogs are omnivores. Both should be eating primarily meat, so their jaw moves in a way that allows them to more easily tear into the meat and flesh of their dinner.
Other species who need more vegetables in their diet have a left-to-right jaw motion that allows them to grind down plant matter. Cows, for example, chew in an almost circular motion.
Looking at your particular pet’s jaw and how it functions will tell you a lot about what they should be eating!
