My Sphynx Has Bad Skin, HELP!

Bad skin is not just a problem for hormonal teenagers! If you have a sphynx cat you know their skin can be super sensitive and prone to flair ups for seemingly no reason.

The good news is that with a little super-sleuthing you can not only identify the cause, but also eliminate it for good.

Here are the top 3 causes of unresolved skin issues that seem resistant to conventional treatments.

NUMBER 1 - LITTER

Many traditional cat litters contain chemical odor control systems which are highly irritating to your cat’s skin and can cause rashes, itching and discomfort. It is best to choose a hypoallergenic  brand of litter to eliminate any allergy symptoms and/or skin issues.

I only recommend these 2 litters as they are by far superior:

  1. Dr. Elsey’s
  2. Pretty Litter

NUMBER 2 - FOOD ALLERGIES OR SENSITIVITIES

Food allergies and food sensitivities are often lumped together as the same thing, but they are actually separate issues altogether.

Food allergies need to be tested for at your veterinarian clinic - they are more serious and present with severe symptoms like swelling, redness, difficulty breathing and, if not treated timeously, they can be fatal.

Food sensitivities on the other hand, while serious, are treatable by identifying the food your cat is intolerant to and removing it from their diet. You can do a food sensitivity test at home - it is a simple saliva test (no traumatic blood draws) which you then send to the lab to be analyzed. Once the problematic food is identified, you remove it from the diet and you should see an improvement in your pet’s health and skin.

NUMBER 3 - GROOMING PRODUCTS

Sphynx cats require specialized grooming practices and specially formulated products that suit their sensitive skin. If you are using ordinary pet products on your sphynx you may notice skin issues developing. I cannot stress enough how important it is to use products that are made specially for the skin needs of hairless animals.

RenewedPet has gone one step further and we offer 3 types of grooming products, because we know that not all hairless pets' skin is the same. If you have active skin issues that need treating, our restorative range of grooming products are formulated to fight and resolve any rashes or skin irritations. Once your pet’s skin has returned to its normal state, then you can choose between our regular or sensitive formulations. The sensitive range of products are made especially for cats with dry and rash-prone skin.

If you have tried all these tips and are still having trouble identifying the cause of your pet’s bad skin, please reach out and schedule a consultation with me and we will deep dive into your pet’s life to discover the cause together.

Keep giving your pets the best of natural life!
