Getting a new pet is such an exciting time. You are awash with happiness at your new cute bundle and are so busy thinking of names and buying them accessories, that it may slip your mind that this can be a very stressful time for your new baby as well as any existing pets you may have.
Cats especially are creatures of habit. If you have watched your kitty closely you may have noticed that they have very similar routines and behavior patterns that they follow every day, and so, the introduction of a new kitten can really turn their well-ordered, calm world upside down. Such a massive disruption to their normal routine can be extremely unsettling so it’s a good idea to consider quarantining your new kitten in a separate area for a few weeks to give each of them time to adjust. Also, I’m sure you can imagine what a huge adjustment your new kitten or puppy has gone through. They have been moved away from their mom and the only home they have ever known and have traveled (sometimes a considerable distance) to your home. Setting your new baby up in a separate area gives both pets a chance to acclimate to the new situation and each other from a safe distance. Slowly, over time, you can introduce them to each other and increase the time spent together in a shared living space. It is so important to safely socialize your new pets with existing ones, to minimize any behavioral issues.
Moreover, forcing this process or doing it too quickly can result in your existing pet getting a cold from the stress. Your new pet, who has gone through a major transition, may also get a cold and then you will be dealing with two sick pets at once which is not ideal. It's a good idea to get your new kitten or puppy checked by a vet once they seem settled at your house just to ensure they are healthy.
